The Chinese Language and Literature Major offers such courses as Chinese studies, Chinese language, classical Chinese literature and modern Chinese literature for the purpose of training future professionals in the field. Established in 1983, the Major allows students to acquire basic knowledge of Chinese literature and linguistics, to understand both ancient and modern Chinese texts and to achieve practical communicative competence in Chinese. The Major sponsors various student activity clubs including a Chinese study group, a Chinese literature club, a Chinese history group, a Poongmul club, a Wooyeon (Chinese drama) club and a Simal (publishing) club. These organizations cooperate in running biannual Chinese cultural festivals, one in the spring semester and one during the fall semester, the Daeryukje (Chinese Mainland festival). Both festivals introduce Chinese history, literature and plays to the Kyonggi community via a variety of artistic performances.
