In a rapidly changing world, Japan has become one of the world's leading economies, lending much weight to the need of learning more about both Japanese language and literature (especially on the part of Koreans) considering the close historical and cultural ties between the two nations and cultures. The ultimate goal of the Major is to train future professionals in Japanese studies to become fluent in Japanese and also understand Japanese literature and culture from both traditional and modern perspectives. The Major attempts to approach this task on the basis of developing students' advanced speech skills and close study of Japanese history and the culture. The Major further helps students to acquire applied professional knowledge via active exchange programs with sister universities such as Kokugakuin University and Osaka Industrial University, as well as by the existence of Japanese study groups both on and off campus.
