The Korean Language and Literature Major was first established at Kyonggi in 1964. The educational goal of the Major is to produce professionals with a thorough knowledge of Korean language and literature and to educate students of other Majors to appreciate traditional Korean culture. The Major has classified the courses into three fields: classical Korean literature, modern Korean literature and Korean linguistics. The Major supports a self-governing student association, which holds periodic seminars related to topic areas covered by the Major and leads extracurricular activities (poetry readings, fiction, essay and play writing and the development of literary criticism). For example, the student association organizes a field trip each year to collect materials and data on Korean folk customs, traditional songs, legends and dialects, which provides students in the Major with materials for study and analysis. |
