Library and Information Science is an interdisciplinary science that understands the nature of information and investigates the theories and methods of its scientific application. It is also concerned with investigating the properties and behavior of information, the forces governing the flow of information and the means of processing information for optimum accessibility and usability. With the development of computer, telecommunication skills and new media technologies, it includes the investigation of the body of knowledge relating to the collection, organization, storage, retrieval and utilization of information. There are many professional roles available for graduates who have completed library and information science study: whether as librarians for various kinds of libraries and information centers; as information managers for companies communicating with newspapers, broadcasters, businesses, research institutes, etc.; as system programmers, analysts or database managers for information systems; or as scholars in the field of library and information science with advanced degrees. After completing four years of undergraduate work, the librarian certificate is offered to graduates of this Major and the school librarian certificate is offered to those graduates who complete, in addition, several prerequisite teacher education courses. |
